6 new tracks to Neringa FM playlist Week #37

#1. Bastien Keb – Love Just Died Tonight

A reclusive figure, we first encountered Seb via his amazing record ‘Dinking In The Shadows Of Zizou’, released last year (seemingly from nowhere) on the excellent One-Handed Music label. A multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, he makes a living writing for TV and film – as Bastien Keb he makes a kind of lopsided funk/soul sound, using battered/borrowed instruments and home recording to create his lo-fi vibe.

#2. Monster Rally – Pelicans

Monster Rally is the brainchild of Cleveland native Ted Feign, which began with the goal of assembling a bunch of old records into a completely different beast. Feighan began crafting tracks from his collection of records, combining his interests in Hip-hop, Exotica, Tropicalia, and Soul. Monster Rally creates tracks that manage to maintain a surprisingly organic sound, as if they were recorded by a full band on analog tape. There is something inherently nostalgic about the sound.

Since his Coral LP, Monster Rally has been an analog to the exotica forefathers. His reinvention of cocktail music via luau-loops and tchotchke breaks evokes a mondo vision of the subgenre. With Mystery Cove, the quiet village is not what it seems, and every resort comes at the cost of indigenous displacement. Beyond the florals and brightly feathered fauna is inferno in paradise.

When the beach party film revival arrives, Ted Feighan (aka Monster Rally) will be the Ennio Morricone of its resurgence. Mystery Cove, the forthcoming Monster Rally album, is a soundtrack to an imaginary movie both fit for the vaults of TMC and primed for a grindhouse exploitation flick screening. Mystery Cove contains a narrative arc of young lovers on an island getaway. As the grooves spin, Monster Rally reveals a cabalistic presence in the jungle that leads them on an adventure of surf competitions (“The Big Surf”), voodoo terror (“Tourismo”), and plenty of slushy cocktails (“After Hours”). The occult meets the salt-rimmed rum mix on Mystery Cove.

Mystery Cove, Monster Rally’s new collection of sample-based tropical pop, is up for pre-order in one of two color vinyl variants (an extremely limited number of test pressings are already gone). Mystery Cove sounds like it’s going to have all the mood-setting tropical hip-hop flavor of past Monster Rally releases, this time set within the structure of an imagined movie soundtrack. Check out Pelicans and enjoy!

#3. Poldoore – Morning glory

The whole album of Poldoore “The day off” starts strong and keeps the vibe going all the way through. Morning Glory is a great intro song for the album, building a great rhythm and getting your head nodding immediately. With the added vocals on a few songs here and there, you break up the album a little bit, but in a very good way. A great album to sit and listen to, or have going in the background while you have guests over.

#4. Gerra G – Preciso me Encontrar

 #5. iZem – Agua Viva

Journeyman, DJ, radio presenter, beat raconteur – it’s been hard to keep up with all of iZem‘s movements lately. The innovative Lisbon-based French producer has been hard at work on his debut LP Hafa, exploring the sounds of Latin America and North Africa in a vivid analogue-digital, genre-defying soundscape that is sure to leave your head spinning. Inspired by cultural greats like Jack Kerouac, Paul Bowles, Tahar Ben Jelloun and Matisse, iZem spent time soaking up the atmosphere at the inspiring Café Hafa, an idyllic cliff-top joint overlooking the strait of Gibraltar, in Tangier, Morocco, which has formed a golden backdrop to his debut LP. Brimming with soulful exoticism, personal narratives and adventurous collaborators, Hafa has been an experiment in taking on the afro-centric sounds of his journey to-date by incorporating modern, introspective songwriting and hybrid beats. We picked you a free track “Agua Viva” from his new LP, that found a good spot in our playlist. LP called “Hafa” is going to be released 16th of October!

#6. Chrome sparks – All Or Nothing (feat. Angelica Bess)

Freshly signed to Ninja Tune’s sub-label Counter Records, Brooklyn-based producer Jeremy Malvin, aka Chrome Sparks, has spent the past several months working on his debut album in a cabin in upstate New York. Our playlist fills up with a fine track “All Or Nothing” from the forthcoming LP, a finely crafted tune featuring Body Language’s Angelica Bess on vocal duties.
